Questions on a website

Ive been asked a couple of questions by a friend that I cant seem to find a definitive answer to and websites themselves would be my strong point.

The way it was put to me is the following. 3 friends build a website, 1 of them registers it and gets it hosted with a company. The guy who registered it has now left the country and is incontactable. The other 2 are worried that someone else will register the site name when the year is up.
So
1) How can someone tell when a site is up for renewal?
2) Whats involved in moving hosts?
3) When a site is regisered, does it stay under that persons(the register-er) name for the duration of the year, or whatever length of time its registered for?

ta.

To look up a domain's ownership, use IEDR or a who is service such as whois.com. Beware that some of these sites may heavily plug their own services, e.g. "register with us and we will help you get the site you are waiting for". I would be sceptical of this sort of thing.

thanks 007, the whois.com worked a treat. Id used it before but didnt know it would give me as much as it did.
