Hi
I will be calling my bank about this query but I hoped to try and get some info here first so I would have some knowledge when I called them.
I took out a mortgage with PTSB in November 2001 (Just over 6 years ago). I received a letter from them a couple of days ago saying that 'due to a change in the amount of tax relief deducted at source your mortgage repayment has been changed'. It will be increasing by approx. €55.00 per month.
I understand that mortgage tax relief lasts for 7 years. Is my 7 years finished now? Even though I am just over 6 years into the mortgage? In other words do they start to count the 7 years from the beginning of 2001?
Or is it because of my own personal circumstances. I became unemployed late in 2007, so I wonder is that effecting my mortgage tax relief?
Yes, yr 1 was 2001 no matter what stage of the year you took it out, so your 7 yrs is up. Full relief is granted for year mortgage was taken out, in your case 2001, and six subsequent full calendar years.
