Question about commercial tax

Hi all,

I am a member of a diving club where I do 99% of the boat towing and I'm wondering could I tax my jeep for commercial use for this purpose? I only intend to use it for towing the boat and for getting to work in snow during winter as I do own a car. I don't have a VAT number and if I have to pay privately I will, just like to get your thoughts on this?

Any replies appreciated!

Simple answer, no. See guidelines below issued to motor tax officers in 2010:

Having regard to Article 3 of the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) (Amendment) Regulations 1992, which provides that a licensing authority must be satisfied that a vehicle is correctly taxed, the applicant, in particular in relation to small vans and adapted goods vehicles, should be asked for supporting documentation which can include but is not limited to:
- evidence of registration for VAT;
- a Tax Clearance Certificate;
- a commercial insurance certificate;
- a copy of their “Notice of Tax Registration Form”.
