Friend is out of work 2 weeks and will be for 3months recovering from operation. Has worked for over 15 years in same employment and is receiving no sick pay from employer. Can anyone advise entitlements in relation to UB and also the stance of her employer????
Your friend should ask her doctor for a social welfare medical certificate to get the ball rolling. As with most social welfare payments, delays applying can result in loss of benefit. The entitlement will be based on contribution history, and at what rate, but it seems likely she would qualify. Lots of info here [broken link removed]
As to her employer, there is no statutory entitlment to sick pay. Unless her contract specifies differently, they are quite within their rights.
As far as I recall there is no statutory entitlement to sick pay from an employer and arrangements for such payments are a contractual matter between employee and employer. What does your friend's contract of employment say about such matters? While out sick one is not available for work so UA/UB would not be relevant and it might be more a case of checking out entitlements to illness/disability welfare allocances or PRSI linked benefits.
