Hi,

I've another SW query please.

I'm not sure in my title which name this goes under - I'm talking about where one is living in rented accommodation and I believe there is a maximum a couple with kids pay for this rented accommodation, depending on where they are in the country.

My main concern/worry is, I've been reading and seeing that if one has a property and decides to hand the keys back to the bank that one will need a letter of unsustainability from the lender stating this fact. I believe that SW require this before they will accept the request for rent allowance/supplement - is this correct?

Thanks very much...

Thanks Cashier - so looks like we will have to get that letter of unsustainability after all then. Don't know how forthcoming they will be with that request, but time will tell.

Would you know by any chance what the difference is between Rent Allowance and Rent Supplement?

Thanks again

Thanks Cashier - I'm hoping, maybe rather naively that 2014 ,maybe, hopefully, will be the year where we will be able to brush ourselves off and start fresh. We'll see.

Thanks for your kind words - it's much appreciated.

There are one and the same. It used to be known as Rent Allowance but I think they changed it to Rent Supplement in recent years due to all the cuts they are making to it, see article here

I would recommend that you speak to someone like Threshold to get advise around this area. http://www.threshold.ie/

Rent Allowance and Rent Supplement are two different Social Welfare schemes.

The former relates to a specific support scheme for persons who were affected by decontrolled rents back in the 1980s, the latter is the more general housing support.

Confusion arises because Rent Supplement is colloquially known as Rent Allowance.

If you are looking up the www.welfare.ie or citizensinformation website for information, you should search for Rent Supplement.
