query on letter offering discount?

Hi All

I’m a gym member, and my annual membership is coming to an end.

Last week I received a letter from the gym, saying that if I signed up before October 19th, I would get a €50 discount.

I telephoned the gym to enquire about the annual membership fee and was given the price. So I visited the gym yesterday with my letter and my membership fee (what was quoted on the phone less the €50).

I was told that my letter wasn’t valid, and the price I was quoted over the phone was the price including my €50 discount, and that I wasn’t entitled to the €50 discount.

Nowhere on my letter did it give any joining fee.

Do I have a right to the price quoted over the phone less the €50, does my letter not entitle me to anything?

At this stage I have only spoken to the girl who happened to be on reception yesterday, as there was no manager available.

Thanks in advance.

Wollran.

tell them you will go elsewhere. im sure they need you more than you need them

The reason the my letter wasn't valid was that according to them, the prices they quoted over the phone, and when I called in person, included the €50 discount.

Well if you mentioned over the phone that you had received the letter, then maybe they just deducted the discount for the purpose of the conversation?

If they have published prices for membership (on poster or something) you should quickly be able to see if you are indeed getting a discount.

Lot of gyms wont publish the price as they need to get you in to "assess" your requirements. ie, hard sell.
Ring any Jackie Skellys or the iveagh and ask them to give you a price over the phone, tell them youre an experienced gym user, exactly what hours you want to go, how often youre gonna use it for and still listen to them squirm out of giving you a price.
I really dont understand why they cant just advertise their price ala Ben D. on print and radio.

Update on my query:

I went to the gym last night to speak to a manger about the letter I had received, and when I arrived there, there was a notice on the reception desk giving the annual joining fee of €400, which is the price I was quoted over the phone.

I showed the manager the letter, and at first he said that the €400 included the €50 discount. I argued my case, saying that if he had a sign on the counter offering membership to everyone at €400, then my letter should be €50 less than this amount.

I explained to him that his letter was misleading etc and after a little negotiation he relented and gave me and my partner membership for €350 each for the next year.

He said he would also ensure that any further letters going out to customer weren’t misleading
