Query on filing of tax returns.

I have a simple question about filing of tax returns. I am a PAYE employee and I have no other source of income apart from my job. As far as I know PAYE employees are not required to file their tax returns. I got married last year and from this year onwards we(myself and my spouse) are being jointly taxed. She is also a PAYE employee. Do we have to file tax returns??

you may be as well off doing so, i think its a form 12 you would complete, the reason being that there may be some part of the 20% band not used by one of you, additionally, its probably a good idea to do so anyway, in order to claim back medical expenses etc (if you have kids you'll need these!!). To be honest though I don't actually remember the implications of being jointly taxed.
 
I think puremeteor you have a point. PAYE types are not obliged to fill a tax return - a civil service initiated exemtion -. However, if an inspector of taxes sends you one, that would be a different matter. You may however then not be able to claim medical exenses as an example, as the Revenue would probably then insist on a Return.
 
Glenbhoy and WizardDr. , thanks for the replies. As far as I know the P60 form should be sufficient even for claiming back medical expenses. Even the Revenue site seems to say so.
