Quantum computers

These quantum computers have me perplexed. I get the Qubit thing I think but I don't understand how it is useful for solving problems.
Instead of being a binary bit which is either 1 or 0 a qubit can be both 1 and 0 at the same time and values in between as well. To my mind it's like a gearbox in 2 gears at the one time. It locks up and won't work.
Can anyone explain quantum computing very simply to me.
To ease my troubled mind.

Thanks Mathpac. After watching a heap of YouTube's about it. Very interesting.
General impressions, waves adding and subtracting together. Spherical vectors. Probability. Microwaves, magnetic waves.
I think i'd like to learn more about it.
