PS3 Price Drop

Smyths are now selling the 40gb ps3 for €399 however I dont think u can play ps2 or ps1 games on it.

You definitely won't ps2 games on it. This sucks for people with a lot of ps2 games! Is this a ploy by sony to force people to buy more games, and have a stack of useless games if and when the ps2 consoles wear out/pack up?...........

It is quite bad actually because they are probably not even mentioning this to people I just came across it in an article. Knew it was too good to be true.

I'm not sure the back-playability (or whatever they call it) really matters that much.

Didn't we all rush out to buy DVD players when they first came out? I know when I did, they didn't give me 10 free movies!
After a while, you might go back to playing a VHS tape of a movie you don't have on DVD, but the difference in quality is remarkable & you're soon back to your DVD collection.
But, like VHS, you can still keep your PS2 & play those games on that console if you want to.
A little inconvenient, but if you're willing to pay to upgrade your hardware......
