I called up the Prudential the other day to ask about some old pensions I started when I was 18 or so. I opted out of SERPs at the time because general advice was it was a good thing to do as I was young. So theres about 8k stg in there. I asked them can I move my money into other funds they have, something with higher risk in equities. They said I can but need to go through a financial advisor. Is that normal practice nowadays for this sort of thing. Don't understand why I can't just work direct with the Pru people?

tks for any comments.

The Pru are very careful particularly following on from the reviews carried out by the PIA in the UK. They do not have direct sales staff here anymore so they are not authorised to give you any advice. There should be no reason as to why you cannot just ask them to send you a switch form and for you to select an appropriate fund if you feel comfortable with that. There is no real difference between your UK Pension and an Irish Pension apart from the fact that you have SERPS contributions. The only difference really is how you take you benefits.
