My wife and I are under separate treatment for income tax purposes. We run a company as proprietary directors withdrawing a salary under the PAYE system. Is there any legal or tax reason why we cannot be treated as jointly assessed for income tax purposes?

Not that i can think of - simply elect for joint assessment if this is the way you want to go

I was thinking so myself. My ex accountant said there is no difference but
I know we can avail of the highrer tax band credits under joint assessment. I am just uneasy that there might be other impliccations if we went joint asasessment but I can think of none.

No, you can't be worse off by being treated as a married couple, ie jointly assessed. It would be unconstitutional
