I am not an irish citizen but living & working in Dublin.I am considering buying an apartment in my native country. My question is, can I get a mortgage in Ireland? If not- I can apply for one in my country- but I am wondering if that would affect my firts time buyer status in Ireland.
It will affect your FTB status regardless of where you get the funds from. Once you buy a property anywhere within or outside the state you lose your FTB status I'm afraid. See on Oasis under First time buyers. Note the quote "...purchased or built on his/her own behalf a house in Ireland or abroad"
Sorry to be a bearer of bad tidings.
I'm not an expert, but AFAIK, the irish banks will only give you a morgage for a property abroad if you already have a property (or other asset) in Ireland which can be used as security if for some reason you can not pay back the morgage.
I know (Irish) people who have bought properties in Estonia and got a morgage from an Estonian bank. If you don't own any property here, then best to look for a morgage abroad where you're buying the property.
