Promotion by stealth

Hi

Some direction if you please

My company is changing our contracts, again. After 4 years of being asked to be Manager. I was completly misled and the company had been very dishonest.

1st contract, grade staff. After 4 years I was asked to be the "manager" of a dept with similar work. I agreed to a trial period

2nd contraced, After trial period it said, grade supervisor.....(despite being asked to be manager). I protested but got nowhere.

3rd contract, (official promotion email sent around) this time it said assistant manager!! My manager told me that it didn't mean any more money or responsibility, just a "title", they witheld my "performace related" bonus unless I signed it. Cohersion. I signed under protest insisting I was supposed to be a manager 2 years ago and got nothing except my OT was removed, an absolute back handed compliment if I ever received one. Soon as I signed it my manager tried to quadrouple my responsiblity, without any authority... (a schrewed tactic)

4th contract, low and behold says Manager, 4 years after being asked to do the position of manager. No one ever explained grades to me. I'm refusing to sign this without receiving some recognition.

I spoke with my compliance officer and she said I am not obliged to sign it. I discussed with HR and my immediate line manager about the transition between Assistant Manager grade to Manager. I said this is a promotion then? They said no, the company is doing away with grades and instead calling them "Job Titles" (Tomatoe TomAtoe) now please sign.

Is there anything I can do?

It's a difficult situation. Are you the only person being treated in this way, or is it their general approach? Are you a trade union member? If so, what is their view on the matter? What if you do refuse to sign - can you just stick at your current role?
