Hi all,
I'm renovating a house I just bought & I need to get some advice on project managing the job. Is there a website out there to help me out?
I need to do a lot of things to the house & I'm only 22 & have no real experience of renovation. I do know what I want though, but who should I get in 1st etc..?
Thanks in advance,
Anthony

well if you have the time, this website is a great place to start picking up ideas, i've found if you dont know folk in the trade websites like gumtree.ie and onlinetradesmen.com are very handy for getting folk in to do work.
best of luck

Thanks Bamboozle, I'l have a good luk around this website & see what I can find. Anyone else got any ideas, like any books or mags available out there that might help my situation?

Fanto, if you hire a general contractor then they will get all the plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc that you need and coordinate them for you - although you will still need to keep an eye on things. They should also be able to give you an itemised quote for the work. I'm in the middle of a renovation myself (also my first time), I've hired a general contractor and I go out every morning to see what's what. I'm very happy with doing it this way.

Hi

Sarah Beeny's (The Property Ladder gal) books might be worth a look, she helps you to put together a budget and advises on scheduling works.

you need to pay a project manager, experience is everything.

A good PM will save you a fortune, programme and sequence works to ensure that works are completed without having to take work out as you may have missed it.

Sparkee is right as if you do not know what you are doing a good builder will see opportunity in your project to make extra cash.

Putting a budget together and scheduling works is all very well, dealing with tradespeople and all the other unexpected hassles of a project are another.

I am building next spring and will project manage myself, mainly because I have a trade and know lots of other tradespeople personally, I still find it daunting and know it will be time consuming along with my very full time job.

If you want any sanity get someone who knows the ropes to do it for you. Then you will only have to chase one person for answers.

Would you dream of representing yourself in court on a serious charge or would you hire a solicitor who knows what they are doing?

Don't gamble with your biggest asset and your mental health.
