Hi All,

Is anyone aware of issues in the areas of Turkey where a lot of Irish people have holiday homes?

I had someone telling my other half about problems where they have their holiday home but my other half can't remember all the details, something to do with Kurds I think.

Just wondering because I know a few people who have properties near this person.

Thanks......

Hi NC,

Vague questions like this are unlikely to get useful responses. Anyway lets see what happens!

I don't know what anyone can tell you based off that. There's been recent rumblings about Turkey invading North Iraq to attack Kurdish separatists. There has always been a risk of terrorism in Turkey - Kusadasi has been bombed relatively recently.

kusadasi was not bombed, there was a bomb explosion on a minibus in kusadasi about 2 years ago. you make it sound like turkey is in war and the place was bombed.

Correct, the Suicide bomber Killing the Irish girl and 20 others was in Marmaris Aug 2006.
The most recent explosions were in Izmir , near Bodrum, on oct 2007 and in May 2007
Others bombs were planted in Istanbul and Ankara throughout the year.

Well, to be fair Turkey has, for a long time now, been involved in an ongoing conflict with the PKK within its own borders which could well spill over into Kurdish northern Iraq real soon now. On the other hand, acts of terrorism such as those mentioned above have been relatively infrequent.

It is in a war, and the place was bombed. A relatively low-intensity war, but war nonetheless. A suicide bombing is a bombing to me. I imagine the victims wouldn't argue the semantics. The results are the same.

so when there were bombs in dublin and monaghan, was ireland in a war?
when there were bombs in london, does that mean that england was in a war.
Definition of war is given as "a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations".

not the same as NI -all out war will break our there someday - that region has to go through the conflagarations and vast movement of peoples that Europe went through in WW1 and WWII -

Cerberos, already done that. hence the mass deportation of greeks to Greece and Turks to Turkey a long long time ago. One of the desterted greek villages is still there. still unoccupied. know the americans were urging Turkey to ease of on their plans to invade north Iraq to tackle the Kurds but if Mexican bandits were killing American soldiers in say Texas would they be so understanding? Turkey has 7 or 8 borders and has done a very good job of patrolling those borders and maintaining a very stable country. it is also part of NATO along with Greece. There is absolutely no chance of Greece or Turkey going to war anymore and anyone who campares the situation in Turkey to a wartime scenario is not even close. Turkey is a fantastic country. I decided not to purchase there last year, mostly because of the distance and inconvenience. No other reason.

Fine but what about:

The Kurds (split across 3 countries) and who should have their own country

Imperial divides that do not reflect the actual populations

The Military who control Turkey (democratic ?)

What Juntas/ Dictators ended peacefully (Greece, Chile, Argentina, Romania, Pakistan, Burma, Iraq.......)?

The difference between Urban Secular (muslim) Turkey and the huge number of poor muslims anchored in in the past and being influenced by Islamic Fundamentalism within anf from outside as their lot does not improve

- I was talking about this with a Kurdish friend of mine, when I asked whether he would be happy to apply for a visa to go and have a holiday in Turkey after they form their own country he was not really sure what to answer. Also I doubt it whether the Kurds already living in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir would like to join a Kurdish region formed in the southeast of Turkey.

Do you really believe that when the Kurds from 3 different regions (actually that should be 4 with Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey) have their own country, everything will be fine. 10 years ago, Iraqi Kurdish leaders Talabani and Barzani were fighting along with the Turkish army against PKK terrorists. There are a lot f differences even among the Kurds themselves.

Imperial divides that do not reflect the actual populations

-???????? So certain parts Dublin should belong to the Polish?

The Military who control Turkey (democratic ?)
- It is true that military has a significant influence in Turkey but it si not really fair to say that they control Turkey. If you were surrounded by neighbours like Iran, Iraq, Syria you would also listen to military carefully.

- I am not sure which junta/dictator you are referring to in Turkey?

- You must have been to Turkey to see the old tradition poor Muslims who are influenced by fundemantalism. It is more complex than what you read in the papers. You don't really have to go to the Kurdish regions to see poor people. At the end of the day it is mostly about people being financially comfortable in their lives. If the economic problems are solved majority of people do not care about the politicians, to a certain extent. This current government has nothing to do with fundemantalists. Under their previuos leader they reached 20 per cent at most, and a lot of things changed since then in the party.
