problem with fruit trees

Hi,

We have a couple of fruit trees in the garden, and they seem to be a bit poorly.

We have two aple trees, a cooker (about 6 years old), which has always been healthy, and given lots of good apples. We also have an eating apple tree, which is down since last year. We got some apples off it last year, a good crop seem to be on it this year, even though it is young. And finally, we have a plum tree, put down same time as the eating apple tree, and got some fruit off it last year. This year it has a fair amount of fruit on it also.

THe problem is the leaves are covered in black spots, and seem to be eaten, and the fruit also has developed the same spots. A lot of the fruit is split (on the cooker) and black and rotting also, with it seems the leaves being eaten also.

Many of the leaves on all the fruit trees are full of holes, browned and blackened with spots.

Does anyone know what could possibly be causing this, and how I can treat it ?

Regards,

This sounds like apple scab on the apple tree with some added insect attack for good measure.
You are a bit late now spraying for apple scab to have much effect on the fruit damage.
But it will do no harm to spray to prevent the scab getting all its claws into the tree.
Have a look at this article...[broken link removed]
Carefully looking after the trees nutrient needs is another way to battle scab by strengthening the trees defenses.

Is it just the leaves that are attacked on the plums or is it the fruit as well?

Thanks for that.

On the plum tree, its both the leaves and the plums. The plums seem to have a raised black spot on them, almost like acne :D

Are they still edible, invluding the apples ?

The spots on the plum tree and associated leaf holes are possibly caused by a fungal or a bacterial / fungal infection that cause leaf tissue to die out in spots and the "acne" to appear on the fruit.

The fruits from both trees should be grand for eating.
Just peel the fruit as apple scab especially has a distateful gritty texture.
