Problem with backup

My laptop has been having booting problems so when I got it working today I decided to do a backup onto an external hard drive. I did this through the Back up in the Control panel.
Whan it was done I plugged the external hard drive into a different laptop and checked the contents.It just gives me a list of numbered zip files with no idea what is in any of them and alot of them won't even open for me......what have I done wrong.....???

You did not use the Restore option with in the backup program.

If you click down through the zip files, you should be able to find the original source files.

Restore option???? I assumed that was what I would use if I wanted to use my backup not to make my backup....can I re-do this so...
