Probate, Wills etc

In people's experience, how long does it usually takes for a solicitor to settle an estate after a person dies? This particular situation is not complicated in that there was a will made and everything is just being left to the dead person's widow. It is now over 6 months after the death and after contacting the solicitor, no progress appears to have been made. The case is still tied up in paperwork and apparently could take another 6 months. I know these things do take time but would this timeframe be normal in a straightforward case?

Yes.

But if the widow or executor is uneasy they should make an appointment with the solicitor to review the file. Or else ask for a progress report in writing.

Most of my clients regard what I do as being entirely straightforward - in their own blissful ignorance of how tedious a probate can be!

Sorry, didn't mean to suggest that there was nothing to it. I do appreciate that the legal process takes time. I've never had to go through this before so just wanted to make sure that the timeframe outlined was usual and that the solicitor wasn't just slow in dealing with things.
