I sold my car recently to a man advertising to buy cars for cash in the local paper, he told me he would take the tax book and i didnt need to change anything over but sure enough i got a taw renewal letter in the post so the car is obviously still in my name, stupid i know but i didnt know any different it was my first car. Do i go to the Guards now or what now?

Welcome to AAM, Polly15. It sounds like you're talking about a car that was registered before 1993? (if not, see here).

You should complete a Change of Ownership form (RF 200; you can download one http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/PublicationsDocuments/FileDownLoad,491,en.pdf (here)) and bring or send it to your local Motor Taxation Office. If he's a dealer he should hold on to the Log Book until he sells the car on to a new buyer. There's no need to panic about the tax renewal letter as long as you complete and send in the Change of Ownership form.
