I have been told I need to get following replaced on my car & have no idea if these prices are in right ballpark. Any guidance really appreciated.

Timing belt - €411.38 incl. labour & VAT
Front brake pads - €72.00 + €37.50 labour + VAT
Rear drums (what are they?) - €92.87 each or they said they could skim them for €112.50 labour + VAT.

Thanks alot.....

Re: Clueless!

Don't know anything about the other two but the timing belt price sounds about right.

Brake Drums are the rear brakes on the car.
Brake shoes press on the inside of the drums rear wheel braking and handbrake.

Pricing sounds about right to be honest.

If the brakes need doing then get them sorted.

What sort of car is it?

Thanks Frank - it's a 00 Fiat Bravo. First work I've had to get done so not so bad I guess.......

I got a timing belt and service carried out for about half your timing belt quote by Malachy Keenan in Convent Place off Hatch St.

200 plus vat is a bargain, but timing belt change prices varies widely.
I got my timing belt on an Audi changed and it was over 1000 euro
But there's more then the timing belt changed, i.e. tensioners, pulleys,
Water pump (hard to change in an Audi without getting into the timing belt area, so best done at the same time) and thermostat (for the same reason as water pump).

Brake pads should be no more than 30 euro for a pair of front pads only

Drums can be expensive.

Try to get the parts yourself or at least ring up the dealer/motor factor to get the price for yourself.

As your car is 6 years old, don't go to a main dealer, go to a good mechanic or garage.

The cost of the timing belt is negligable compare to the cost of fitting it. Fitting it takes time.

When getting the timing belt done also do the waterpump. Its a false economy to skimp on that.

Timing belt going costs > 1500 to fix (depenging on car)
Water pump going can cause the head gasket to go which will also cost big bucks.

I would say that the prices quoted there are ok. Shop around and see what else you can get.

Be careful

A neighbour of mine dropped the car in to have TB changed at kwik fit or similiar outfit.
They ,made a mistake with the timing and wrecked the head.
They got the car sorted, but I wouldn't trust everyone to do the same.
