One thing to watch for: check out options on where you call from.
In particular, don't call from hotel rooms! If you do, you may find your hotel phone bill is higher than the room rate (I'm not joking here - I've seen it happen).
There's loads of alternative options, the relative costs of which change over time.
You'll often see an Irish number written as +353 for this very reason. The + can change depending on the country the call is being made from (e.g. for the UK it's 00353, for the US it's 011353 etc.).
I,ve noticed on a few recent trips when I call Ireland from US on my mobile that the 011 didnt work...I had to type the + sign and then 353.
Maybe it was just the particular network I was on.
