Pre-approved loan offers ... I thought banks couldn't send these anymore

Hi there,

Over the past few weeks Mrs. Biggerry and I got a few pre-approved loan offers. They went straight to my recycling bin, but I'm wondering can banks do this? I thought there was some sort of law passed sometime ago preventing banks from this.

Does anybody know if this is true?

Thanks!

I've heard people say that this was outlawed in recent times but have never found anything that supports that view.

I made an appointment with the manager of my local branch and told him that I did not wish to receive any marketing information from the bank. It took two more visits to him before the system stopped sending me the stuff, but I got an apology and a Cross ballpoint pen to emphasise the apology. (I assume that I was given that make of pen because I was!)

Just thought I'd update you on this. I mailed the customer services and complained about this and their reply was
"... We wish to advise that our mailings do indeed comply with the Consumer Protection Code as they are not pre-approved applications, they are an invitation to apply for a loan.

As requested we have now removed your details from our mailing list."

So there you have it!

Are your details pre-filled on the form? If they are, the bank could be in breach of the data act.

After getting a mortgage with First Active we were considering getting a credit card with them as well (we only have UK cards at the moment). They then sent us, unsolicited, a credit card application form, prefilled out in biro from the local branch. We shredded it and applied for the ICE card from PTSB on principle.

Just wondering did you shred them first? I'm a bit paranoid about my name going into the recycle bin so I shove anything like that through my €15 supermarket shredder first. I don't know if I'm really likely to have my identity stolen through stuff being found in my green bin but I don't want to find out the hard way!

Hi Seagull, no the details weren't filled in. I was asked to that on the letter that accompanied the form.

TreeTiger, yep I shredded it after PatriciaFox asked the same question (FYI: Her comment was removed due to the language used in the post)
