keep receiving flyers through the post about how an post will allow you buy sterling commission free , i seem to recall being in a post office not so long ago and the prices they have up on the screen were not in line with euro to pound live prices on the likes of the currency converter websites

Correct. "Commission free" is meaningless, if not mendacious. It just means they offer you a crappy exchange rate instead.

thought so , close relative is talking about buying a used car in the north , they mentioned using an post

It should be outlawed making misleading claims like "commission free", like An Post do, in the context of FX trades.
