Hi – I wondered if anyone knew about claiming back CGT overpayments? I couldn’t find a specific thread on the topic…

I have to make a CGT payment by October 31st (on a few stock sales earlier this year) but I’m running late and don’t know if I’ll be able to get an accountant to do this in time: I’m abroad and can’t get hold of all the information right now. So I might have to make a rough calculation myself and make an interim payment on that basis. But I don’t know anything much about allowances or allowable losses or charges I can claim, so I think I’ll inevitably overpay if I do it myself.

My question is – is it possible/straightforward to claim back a CGT overpayment later? If anyone had any insights or ideas, I’d be really grateful,
thanks![FONT=&quot]

as far as I am aware, you will make the payment by the end of October of this year if the gain was made pre-sept 2007, the return for the gain does not need to be made until 31 October 2008. If there was an overpayment then you will receive a refund as your balancing statement will show that you are owed a refund of tax because the cash paid will exceed your tax liability. What I do not know is the timing of when you can get the refund, but you will be refunded an overpayment of CGT.
