Possible bank mergers

Having read today's article in the Irish Independent re Irish Nationwide Building Society am just thinking that it will be more difficult to spread round money in different banks to avail of the Irish Banking Guarantee, if INBS, Permanent TSB and EBS merge! So do we go back to putting cash under the mattress or what?

There will be less competition but there are still multiple options for your deposits.

Whatever happens to INBS/Anglo/INBS/EBS merger(s) there are many other options ...

Namely at least 11 other options ... Ulster, NIB, AIB, BOI, Investec, Nationwide UK, Northern Rock, KBC, State Savings, Leeds Building Society, Rabo etc.

Does anyone feel they would have confidence in the banking sector to leave more then €100k on deposit with a bank- assuming the above and INBS, EBS and PTSB merge together to form a new entity?

Im just curious, as up until 2008, not even a dog in the street would have known anything about deposit guarantees and now people will not trust any insitution without one.

Given no insitution has actually gone to the wall and the likely hood of one doing so (IMO) is slim to none. I feel if it was going to happen, it would have by now.

I just cant help but feel it the media stopped banging on irish security, gov debt and banks weakness, people would not be so hyped up about it.

Dont get me wrong, its vital people know about deposit guarantees, but I cant help but feel people overreact because some idiot like Charlie Weston in the Indo writes some comment, or Joe Duffy allows panick stations on the airways by talking down the banks,

Im just ranting!
