Porn, Sky and children

Hi All.

Anyone know a way of blocking/filtering unsuitable Sky channels? We've just bought the Family package and, despite using Parental Control to lock out anything over 18 (or 15) this doesn't prevent unsuitable material of the "Red Hot Babes" type coming in at 8pm. I'm not a prude - I'd just rather my kids didn't have access to this type of stuff.

Sky said, when I rang, that if the channel doesn't rate the content the Parental Control will not exclude it. They said there's no way to filter or block channels (by number, say e.g. channel 915) and she told me frankly that they make millions on revenue from these channels. Honest, certainly, but hardly what I want to hear. She suggested removing the card but that smacks of the all or nothing approach - why not let the kids access the good stuff and filter out the porn as I can do on the family PC. (Not perfect, I know, but reasonably effective.)

Anyone with greater experience than me know of a way to lock out unsuitable stuff?
Thanks in advance.

Have the same problem & also addressed with SKY - I got the same speil as you did. I used to use have chorus before & one could block each channel individually. Unfortunately not with SKY though to my knowledge

Is the adult material available by default or is it pay per view requiring a credit card to enable it? Or, even if it is, is it allowing access to previews or something? I can't believe that they don't provide some sort of parental control/screening for this sort of situation.

It is available by default Clubman. They have soem channels called Babecast which are not restricted under the 'Over 18' control that you set up yourself.

I have really young kids who would not be up after 8 anyway so it is not a problem for now.....I'll be getting rid of Sky as soon as the 12month contract is up anyway - unless they have this problem fixed. There is to much crap on it.

Is the following article of interest?

Sky has today announced what it’s calling ‘the most significant enhancement to its Parental Control facility since the launch of Sky Digital in 1998’.

The new upgrade will enable parents to restrict access to all channels* or even to remove all listings for adult channels from Sky's easy-to-use Electronic Programme Guide, the Sky Guide.

The new controls, to be made available to all Sky and Sky+ boxes by Summer 2005, are in addition to the existing ratings and spending limits (**see below) that are already available via the Parental Control facility. All digital satellite viewers will be able to take advantage of the enhanced Parental Control facility without purchasing any new equipment or paying any additional charge.

Thats exactly what the original poster is looking for ...and me too.

SKY will dump a free software update to you over the air (usually late at night) to update your sky box. It may even be happening as we speak. The best site for Sky related news is Digital Spy who say a new menu option has been added

Leave the box switched on overnight for the update

About time too!

I'm certainly no prude either, but I can't imagine anyone wanting their kids to see the 10-minute free previews on these channels.

I tried this at home ;last night but the update did not happen yet - great to know that it is on the way though

AlastairSC - are you saying that Sky family pack gives access to adult material? I recently enquired into getting the sky package (family and maybe sport) - and as i have 2 teens one of my questions was blocking the availability of adult films and was told by the sales rep that I would have to request this to be sent rather than block. Now I'm not so sure???????? I haven't signed anything yet so I must go back to the shop and talk to them again.

Thanks to all, esp John Archer, for the responses.
Yes, Clubman, we got just the Family pack, no movies or Sports.
Gimme, some channels seem devoted to this stuff. Most are all clustered together in the 900's section (just next to Sky's own ReadMe files for how to use the service!) but I've been finding more. Not all channel titles suggest their content - some channels are misleadingly labelled with innocuous titles - seems I have to look through everything before I'll know what I don't want my kids to see.

To be honest I feel a bit miffed with the sales guy who said that parental control allowed parents to control what their children saw. This is misleading - you may be able to target individual films with certification but I wasn't aware that whole channels are devoted to this stuff. (Too naive, I suppose!)

Ideally, I suppose, (following Internet ideas again) I'd like to see a "can go to" list rather than try to block everything. I'll get back to them about the stuff in John Archer's helpful link.

Sorry, Monsieur Bond and Tonka, should have credited you for those links. Tonka, that site is very interesting. I've bookmarked it for regular checking. Thanks.
