Porcelain plates in M&S

I'm looking for plain white, reasonable quality plates, in a shape that I like! I've come across a set of porcelin (sp?) dinner plates in M&S (I think it was called Matrix, but I'm not sure), I was wondering if anyone had used them already, are they OK, prone to chipping or anything? There's a set called Arctic White in Dunnes at the moment, but my sister has used them in work, and they chip easily.

Anything you buy in M&S is normally very good quality and they replace or refund without any hassle. Roches might be a good place to look also.

Re: porcelin plates in M&S

Thanks Clare. I looked in Roches first. The plates in a design I really liked were outside our budget for ordinary ware (about €14 to €19 for a dinner plate!!). They had cheaper ones, but when I got them home, DH found that nearly half the plates had gaps on the glaze which weren't covered, so they went back.

debehnams have a sale at the moment and they have good quality stuff.

If you're just looking for dead plain white (round) plates, Roches do a Dema box set for about €30 for a 26 piece set - perfect for everyday use and we haven't had any chipping problems in the year we've had them.

Re: porcelin plates in M&S

Dema white were the ones I bought first, but in the box we opened first half the plates had gaps on them, so DH is very very against them. I need to get quite a few plates, as we have two children and two lodgers, and usually run the dishwasher about every second day. Any more suggestions welcome though!!

Edited to add, these are the plates I was thinking of:

Re: porcelin plates in M&S

I have a set of denby white and recently bought extra bits of very similar looking white dishes in dunnes. The dunnes ones as far as I can see are every bit as good as the denby, in and out of the dishwasher no chips. I'm not sure that they are called artic white so may not be the same as your sisters. The instructions with my dishwasher say not to unload when the dishes are hot as the dishes are more likely to break, unfortunately I read this after I had chipped a few of the denby unloading the machine.

I also bought a set of white dishes in Dunnes about 2 months ago. Almost every one is chipped, both side plates and dinner plates. I had to go back to my old set which I've had for years. The cereal bowls didn't chip.

IF anone is interested in buying household stuff in M&S, there's 20% off between September 7 and 12th...

Dunnes have a deal on doulton at the moment . five piece place setting for €10. ( with stamps)

Does anyone know if La Porcellana Bianca is sold anywhere in Ireland now? It used to have an outlet shop in Dun Laoghaire. Lovely quality white porcelain wares at reasonable prices (quite resilient to banging while washing up!). Have a couple of serving bowls, but would like to get another couple to match. They originate in Italy, and don't seem to do online sales.
