We have taken down wallpaper and the wall underneath is quite damaged? Has anyone used Polycell SmoothOver Damaged Walls? If so is it easy to use for a relatively non-diy person?

Yes, I've used that in the past. It's relatively easy to use, but get yourself a proper plastering float rather than that Polycell tool. Unlike some other products, SmoothOver is easy to sand afterwards if there are slight bumps and grooves. Do it in small sections and take your time.
