PO error costing me

The Post Office lost our direct debit payment for our credit card. After complaining they eventually found the payment but have told us they cannot send our money back to us or pay the bill it was intended for. Apparently we have to return to the Post Office (45 miles away - we just happened to be passing on the day) where we paid the bill to be given cash back (well over £1000). In addition they are unable to say when this will be - they told us this 10 days ago - still no idea of when money will be available. We do not live anywhere near the PO and our credit card bill has accrued a lot of interest purely down to the PO error. We always pay our account off in full.

DO we have to accept a cash payment? We never walk around the street with that sort of money. I have asked for a cheque, dd back into bank account or simply just that they pay the bill for which we gave them the money. They say they cannot do any of this. Is this correct? Are we liable for the credit card costs incurred?

We do not know what our rights are?

You have found your way onto an Irish site where the knowledge-base is primarily about Irish financial and consumer affairs. Someone here may be able to point to to an equivalent UK site.
