Is there any advantage/need to apply a skim coat finish to walls which will be covered with tiles, or is it ok to put tiles straight onto the scratch coat??
It depends what tiles you are using. If using ceramic or porcelain then weight is not an issue, but if using natural stone such as marble then the weight becomes an important factor.
