Plaster at door

Hi,

In a house thats built since 1930s, I hear that the plaster came out of the front door in the last spell of bad weather (I cant see the door currently) and that it looks like behind the plaster was newspaper.....!

Any idea whether this is right or wrong? Would it be ok to just re-plaster over it? Im concerned about the stability of the door now.

We found this too. Apparently, in the good old days, it was used as a filler to fill large gaps!! We had it all removed and wood inserted but the guys doing the work said it would have been fine.
