Planting on & around septic tank

Hi,
We have a septic tank and the top is exposed and slightly above the level of the lawn. I want to blend this in with the garden. I have a few questions:
1. I know i'm supposed to leave the 2 pipes on top exposed but can I plant a rockery or something on it? is there a weight restriction?
2. When it is emptied is this done through the pipes or do they need access to the top of the tank?
3. How far from the septic tank and percolation area should I plant fruit and veg?

Thanks.

1. I wouldn't plant a rockery with heavy stones. Smaller ones (Scottish cobbles, or that ilk, sure). But see 2 below:
2. There should be a manhole on top of the tank (possibly the vent pipes protrude through it.) You should certainly keep that accessible.
3. Well away from it. Uphill if possible! Having said that, if your tank is functioning properly (i.e. discharging clear water) it shouldn't really be a problem, but I wouldn't risk it myself.
