pipe in garden

hi there, I have an old house built in 1952 and am currently trying to make the garden nice. In the middle of the garden is a pipe (twic eht size of a hose in width(that is about 8 feet in height and it has a cover on it. It will not budge no matter how hard and long I did. God forbid, but would it be a sewer pipe or other? Any help appreciated.

Is this pipe a vertical pipe (you say 8 feet in height?), possible vent pipe for end of sewer?. Is it metal/ plastic/ clay? Tell us more and you should be able to get some more informed answers.

any chance its a pole for a clothes line.....
