Pilot License: Ceist Re license conversion.

When holding an FAA license, and convert to an IAA/JAA license are both licences obtained or are you 'swapping' one for the other?

When you hold both an FAA and JAA license does flight time count towards keeping both licenses current or do you have to e.g. designate a license to fly under?

Are there any advantages to holding both types of license other than no check outs when wanting to fly in the states/Europe?
