Hi,

My groundsman will be doing the foundations for my piers in the next few days and I have been told that I should put steel into them for strength. Can anyone confirm this and what type of steel would be needed?

If your going to be hanging any gates you will most definitely need rebar in the piers, 2 or 4 no. (depending on pier size and arrangement) 20mm bars should be plenty, if using blockwork and filling with concrete.

Place an RSJ vertically into the middle of the footing for your pier and up the length of the pier. Get a metal plate welded on, and weld perpendicularly to the RSJ so that future gates can be hung off the plate. Your stonework/blockwork can then be done around the RSJ. Your gate load will then be transferred to the RSJ and not to your stonework/blockwork.

then I would use 20mm reo with about 150, 200 centres should get you on the way
