phone or camera

I want to give a present of a camera. The intended recipient has a mobile phone. And needs only a basic point and shoot camera.
Is it a better option to get an upgrade phone camera or a new say 3megapixel camera(ixus 30)?

Despite what they say, mobile phone cameras are not up to too much. Great for the pub, or quick funny snaps, but not too good for prints, and forget about enlargements of any quality. Most if not all of them also don't have a flash which is a big flaw in my book.

For example, Nokia 6230i has a 1.3 megapixel camera, which is quite good, but nowhere near as good as the 3 megapixel plus flash (plus zoom?) camera you mentioned.

... But then you can't make phone calls through a camera!

If the intended recipient already has a mobile phone, get them a proper camera. The Ixus 30 looks very nice and all, but it's not by any means the only good buy in that bracket. Do a ; there's been loads of threads lately about digital cameras...
