The organised crime groups behind these scams exploit the countries with the weakest controls around spoofing numbers. I assume Belgium is a weak link.Can't help wondering whether the authorities are really serious about stopping it.

it's been going on for months and it's fair to ask why it hasn't been shut down by now.

They are, in some cases they have been successful. Tracking them isn't trivial and a really organised fraudster may well have vanished by the time the gears if international law enforcement turn.There are likely to be hundreds if not thousands of victims by now, so authorities in Belgium and elsewhere (should) be aware of it.
Never click on links in emails, texts, WhatsApp etc.click on an official-looking link.
It all looks legit when you link to a website.
No they didn't phone you - they just phone numbers one after another and eventually they get an actual numberI seldom use my mobile phone. I don't even know my own phone number. Yet the scammers from Belgium were able to phone me.
