Phone cabling query

I am moving the PC to a new location in the house and need to cut a phone cable and put on a new connector.

Anyone have a view if this is a straightforward bit of DIY, and is the tool to 'crimp' the cable end readily available ? Or is this something specialised that would need a professional ? The cable connector to be fitted is bog-standard in Ireland, i.e. plug imodem.

I've asked 2 people (one an eircom employee, the other a tool/gadget head) and neither have one I could borrow.

put it in series with the first connector inside the door.

Is it not possible to do what you need without resorting to crimping? Can you not extend from where the socket is now using off the shelf extension cabling?

If you really do need to crimp connectors on then it's not hard (fiddly but not hard) and the tool is readily available from electrical supplier stores or [broken link removed] or [broken link removed] or the like. However it's hardly buying it for a once off job. Better to look around for a pre crimped run of cable of the appropriate length as suggested above.

There is no existing socket.
That is my problem.

I need to terminate it to either a socket or a RJ45 plug. What I hoping for a steer on is .. does this require specialised equipment, such a phone cable crimper, or does it require more expert knowledge ?

FWIW - the cable currently starts in the hall, comes into a bedroom through the floor, along the wall and ceiling of the bedroom, and then on to the attic. The previous owner did all of this.
I now want to locate the PC out of the attic, in the bedroom through which the cable runs, so want to cut the cable and get it usable for connection to a modem.

ClubMan - our postings crossed. Yes, I could do that but then would face a different problem in the hall to connect the replacement cable where the current one starts. And the hole through which the cable travels from the hall to the bedroom is too narrow for a RJ45 plug and I do not want to widen it.

Is it possible you could pull the section of cable that goes into the attic from the bedroom ceiling back through the hole, leaving the RJ11 (telephone) plug in place - this would save you having to recrimp the cable...

If that's not possible (or too short), why not get an extension lead and [broken link removed], join the two cables in the attic and feed the extension through the hole in the ceiling to where you want it to go..?

There is no RJ socket in the attic. The cable terminates there at a female wall socket. Equally, to run a cable from there back down to the attic would involve widening the hole in the bedroom ceiling and I'm unwilling to do that.

There are a number of options here and my preferred one is to cut the cable and put an RJ connector on it. Assuming I manage to get to Peats or Maplins and buy one for €20/€30, it is then straightforward, e.g. as straightforward as wiring an electrical plug ?

I see what you mean. In that case it looks like you will have to cut the cable then - it's not a big job (about 2 minutes) but you'll need the RJ11 plug and crimper to do it.

As an example, have a look at this page on Lanshack; it's about making a CAT5 cable (see "Patch Cable Assembly Instructions" section, about half way down) but the idea is the same.

The plugs are easy to come by, but as ClubMan said it mightn't be worth your while buying a crimper just to do a single plug. Do you know any alarm installers, I've found those guys tend to carry those types of crimps as well

A great suggestion - thank you !

My alarm guy is due in the house next week so I'll ask him to do it instead.

Just a thought - would it be worth your while to cut the cable where its fitted to the socket in the attic, pull the cable back through the hole in the ceiling (no widening necessary - take socket down through hatch ;)) and rewire the socket in the bedroom - the socket wouldn't be mounted but it'd be the quickest option and there's no expense......

To close - bought a socket in Power City for €3.00. Stripped and wired the cable myself - all colour coded so no expertise required. Phone connection up and running in new location :D.
