Phone/broadband company threatening legal action

(Not sure if this should be in consumer rights ... apologies if I've misfiled it.)

I recently switched phone/broadband providers because the broadband service I was receiving deteriorated so much. I deliberately left behind a substantial unpaid balance.

Now, the provider has demanded immediate payment and is making the usual debt collector/court threats. My position is that I was forced to switch because of the effective non-provision of broadband, which I use for work. I am willing to pay arrears in respect of line charges only.

The prospect of arguing my case in court doesn't faze me, but I don't want to incur huge legal costs for the sake of pride. What are my chances?

Amount being too small to justify court action.
I'm not sure about that. If they hand it over to a debt collection agency, the amount will go up, and depending on how vindictive they are they can escalate the action, and the costs. That's my understanding of how this process works.

That is criminal court. This is a civil matter. Different ball game.

Anything under €500 is not worth suing over. Any decent solicitor will tell you that.

Nope. They are criminal. The traffic warden is the complainant on behalf of the prosecutor which is the council. The exact same as a Garda case.
