Peugeot 306 clunking sound

Hello all, bought a peugeot 306 last week and all was fine. Now when I am coming out of first gear, and sometimes 2nd and 3rd there seems to be a clunking sound underneath the car or in that general area. A few times the engine has nearly stopped when taking off only to jump back to life. Any ideas on what might be the problem?

All I know is the gearbox/clutch can be a weak point on these cars. Top up the gearbox oil, drive her gentle and hope for the best.
