Petrol Price- How much is too much

Just wondering what price people are prepared to pay for Petrol/Diesel?

  • How Much is too much?
  • At what point does it become unsustainable to drive a car (anywhere)?
  • Can anything be done about it?
Petrol at the moment is about 1.56 a litre and Diesel is not far off.

Personally I havnt been able to afford to fill my car in the last 6 months (€20- 30 a go is all I can manage at the moment) (and its a 1.1 litre). Its €75 euro to fill. I shudder to think how much it costs to fill a 3 or 4 litre!

How much does it cost you too fill your car and how often do you do it?
 
Agree - seems to be creeping up & up... & up again... Paying 150.9 for diesel at the moment... get about 500kms for around €40 a week...

For me it's a neccesity - don't have public transport where I live, too far to cycle - so no other way to get to work but drive. I've tried the car pooling, but with different finishing times, it's difficult to accommodate pick up times.

Only a bunch of economic clowns would increase VAT on an essential during a recession, the tax and duty take on fuel is rapacious, the knock effects is that the increased costs for delivery and industry will be passed on to you and me, increasing inflation, you ask "Can anything be done about it?" Vote them out in the next election that I personally think will be arriving earlier than predicted! :)
 
I remember my mother filling the car up with £5 worth of petrol every week when I was a kid. When the petrol ran out she would wait till the next week. I also went to school on the back of her bike or walked. She also used to walk to the shops for her groceries. I wonder if we are returning (or being pushed) back to those days.

Also when I was buying my first house she advised me never to buy anywhere that was more than a 10 minute walk from where you shop, I'm glad I listened.

Oil is a finite resource, like it or not price rises are inevitable.
 
It takes about €108 for a fill up (2.0L Passat TDi). Fair enough, i do get a fair bit of km out of that, but i do a lot of driving for work and pleasure. Probably top up every 10 days, maybe more frequently. I claim my mileage back from work, but i still have to pay for the fuel myself so out of pocket until the mileage comes back in. It's scary. First car was a Fiesta, i think £25 used to fill it!

Mine was an Opel Corsa, used to cost me about £15 to fill back in the day.
 
Is there a breakdown somewhere of where exactly your 156 cent per litre goes?

How much to exchequer. How much to forecourt etc.

I remember in late 2008/Early 2009 Oil prices went berserk and topped out about $130 to $140 per barrel. At that time I think prices at the pump had just hit about 110 cent per litre.

Price of WTI Crude is now $99 per barrel with Brent at $115 so why is the price at the pump so damn expensive?

I know Euro/Dollar rates affect it also but surely that plus VAT changes cannot account for 40 cents increase?
 
Wholesale prices are higher than normal these days, I hear. Traded in Rotterdam.

Don't know why.
 
Mine costs 120 to fill. 2 litre. I think the price went up coz of threats by Iran to close the Gulf of Hormuz, the drop in the value of the Euro factors in too.

Petrol = 58.71c

Don't forget that 23% VAT is applied to the excise (increasing excise on petrol to 72.21c/litre), there is also a carbon tax of 5.6c/litre. Finally, there is 23% VAT on the cost of the raw material i.e. the fuel itself.

The net of tax cost of a litre of petrol can be calculated as

P = (N-0.7221-0.056)/1.23 - 0.7221 - 0.056

where P is gross of tax and N is net of tax.

If price of petrol is 1.60, net of tax cost is 76c or in other words 84c is going straight to the Govt.

One thing that does work is use less of it. This is a simple economic way of getting any price down - simple supply and demand.

Only thing is, we seem to be addicted to the motor car.

If the entire world stopped making unnecessary journeys or there was a big increase in car sharing the price would drop, guaranteed. The oil companies and Gov's are making a packet out of fuel, and they know people will continue to buy it. If they seen a big drop in demand do you think prices wouldn't come down?

I know that I have already started to ask "is this journey necessary" and try to do everything I need to when I'm out in the car rather than do multiple runs.
