Petrol lawnmower recommendation

Just bought a house with a 120ft garden. I want to buy a petrol lawnmower (probably self-propelled). There are a few youngish trees also so I also need a strimmer (probably electric/cordless). Any recommendations?

There's a "Prolawn" in Woodies on special offer for €230. Has a Briggs & Stratton engine but metal deck which might rust. Might be better paying a bit more for a aluminium one that won't rust. There are a few in B&Q also. McAllister seems to be their better brand. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Would definitely recommend self-propelled ... briggs&straton engine are popular for a good reason (once they are looked after)... try to get a variable cut height in the blades that is easy to do...

Just in relation to the trees - I would recommend putting a border around these, so as not to be near the trunk of the tree when cutting... simple square /circle border of stones or bark around the trunk... especially as the trees are young - cuts & nicks from the strimmer / lawnmower will affect them over time...

One line of advice - Stay away from DIY store brand lawnmowers.. Cheap rubbish (even with B&S engine). Mower will fall apart.

Go to a dedicated mower shop or look on the second hand market. Steel decks are fine - much stronger that aluminium.

Brands to look for

Harry
Snapper
Husqvarna
Honda
Stiga
Murray
Morrison

Good advice from RonanC on the mower. Have heard that the B&S engine is, like most things these days, not what it used to be but IMHO still very good. We have had two and both were very good. The most recent one is ancient but we do keep it well serviced.

If you run the search option in this forum you should find other threads on both of these items. If you are buying both from the same supplier be sure to haggle.

It may well be ok now to use a cordless on youngish trees but I found the battery operated strimmer to be useless. Long term as far as I know petrol is the way to go. For servicing this guy is very good so he could give you advice on brands if you give him a call:

Honda, yer only man. Have mine 7 years now and bar changing the oil has not had a service. Threatening to get one every year but its still flying. Worth spending a little bit extra in my opinion. Its a good investment.
