Petrol Gauge Not Working - Any Suggestions

Howdi,

VW Golf 97, petrol gauge has given up the ghost. Full tank stil reads as empty. Other dials on the Facia Board are fine and all move independantly. Anybody any experience of anything similar or can anyone suggest a prognosis?

Suspect either an eletrical connection, a fuse, or the sender unit in the tank.

Thanks for that, figured that it could have been that I was replacing a fuse for the rear light and might have jigged it around. I will give it a shot and see what happens.

Right i have changed the fuse - no joy, I went into the boot off the car, found the tank cover, took that off and traced the wire through the frame of the car (no breaks or deviations as far as I could see) - no joy. I then took off the entire dash board only to discover the Dial Unit is sealed and I couldn't get into the back of it - NO JOY. I am pretty much "stumped" has anyone got any further suggestions or am I better off just replacing the dial set-up or guesstimating the fuel supply from now on?

The sender unit inside the tank may have failed.

I think it's beyond a DIY job btw.
