Personal Hotspot and 3 Contract

Hi all. I have a contract with three for mobile. My wife also has a MIFI dongle which she needs for work and I also share this with her. However lately the MIFI dongle is not working and I get an error which says something along the lines of "Connection Failed; Profile is invalid" Usually it comes back on after a few hours but it is impacting me as I work from home and need this connection to work.

As a workaround I created a personal hotspot on my 3 phone and can access the internet fine along with my VPN which is great. I have unlimited data so not worried about usage. However my concern is when I asked three previosuly if I could use my phone in this way they said I was not allowed. I have heard some stories where folks were charged 100's of euros after setting up a personal hotspot. As it is I feel I am been fleeced by three as my plan only allows me 100 units a month for 30 euros and therefore each bill I recieve is on average 80 euros. Surely paying this amount each month I should be entitled to us the free data I have on my phone on another device i.e my laptop.

Hope this makes sense but would like some advice as I have only just created the personal hotspot and if this could be an issue then I need to shut it down. Dont want to be getting anymore surprise bills.

Are you completely wedded to Three?? Depending on coverage, Meteor now have an offer of 50GB of mobile data for €30 that lasts for 180 days. This is on pre-pay and if you exhaust the data cap, just buy another. They also do bill pay options and this might suit you better.

So I'm tied to three until April so can consider it then. But in regard to my question do people use there phone as Personal Hotspots and is this ok providing data usage is not excessive.

I was a Meteor customer for years and their data and customer service leave a lot to be desired.

The reason Three don't allow tethering on their unlimited data plans is to prevent people from using it to watch the likes of streaming movies and use excessive amounts of data. If your usage is under 15GB then I don't think there will be a problem.

You can ask Three directly [broken link removed].

Cool will ask now. I am not using for streaming. This is simply for general internet browsing and VPN for work. Probably close to 20GB a month.

I've been using a hotspot on my 3 'all you can eat data' for a few weeks, just for browsing etc. It's PAYG but I have noticed no change in top up date.

Why are you on such a ridiculous plan when the max bill pay plan is €55?
Three aren't fleecing you, you're fleecing yourself.

From reading on the boards thread about this, only ex O2 customers have had massive charges put on their accounts for tethering.
