Peer to peer lending seems to be popular in the UK but not here. Mark Hennessy had an article in the Irish Times in February 2011.

I couldn't find anything about it in Askaboutmoney.

It was discussed in Boards.ie in 2009 and ,apparently, was not available here because of Irish legislation.

I can't post URLs (less than 15 posts)

You can find the links by googling “peer to peer” ireland

It seems a pity that peer to peer lending is not possible here particularly if it true that (a) banks are lending less because of their perceived need to deleverage and (b) there may be people such as those fortunate enough to sell at the height of the property boom who have money on deposit who would be willing to invest.

is that not like asking a mate for a lend, sure that was always popular

This issue was definitely discussed a few years back here on Askaboutmoney - search for "Zopa" and/or "Egg" for example. Always seemed to me that this would be akin to sub-sub-prime lending in many cases - i.e. very risky.

Update: did a few searches but there are quite a few broken links. However search for "Zopa" anyway and you will find a few old threads that are still intact.
