Paying more than statutory redundancy

I am looking at paying an employee a few thousand more than the statutory requirement for redundancy. Is every cent above the statutory amount taxable? If so, I presume I can write her a cheque for the stat. amount and put the balance through the payroll?

Ex statutory payment to employees on the termination of their employment may be deemed to be non taxable.
