Hi guys.

I opted to pay the 2014 LPT using monthly direct debt from my bank. Is the full amount taken in one go? And is it taken out in January?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Sahd.......also if I wanted to change to say pay with my Credit Card instead can I change my payment option up to a certain point?

What I can't understand is why was the 15th January chosen and the 15th thereafter. Most people do not get paid until the last week in January and with Christmas etc. it will be a very long month. Supposedly they want most people to pay by direct debit; however they have misjudged the timing in my book.

Instead of a monthly DD can one not have a yearly DD, and it could be set to be the date in March that revenue allow for the SDA.

Yes, this is called the single debit; however the claim in today's Irish Independent review of the payment types is that Revenue want people on a direct debit arrangement as they can then be sure of payment. The date to me seems counter intuitive and simply plucked from the air based on it being the middle of the month.

I don't get it Deas, I pay my life insurance, my car insurance, my equivalant of the AA by an annual DD, it comes out as one payment. As far as I know that makes them a DD. The amounts change each year, I get notified of the amount and that it will be taken on x date and that's it.

In relation to you point about an arbitrary picking of a date mid month. Why didn't revenue sent the letters in February with a deadline for credit cards in March with the same date as the single debit authority. What is the advantage to revenue to getting some of the money now?

The LPT is just another bill to pay and for most people it is not a big one, compared to heating, TV subscriptions, health insurance etc

A LPT liability of €855 for 2014 is only €71 a month DD, and thats for a €500k property. Regardless of the DD date it is quite affordable. All Social Protection income is paid weekly and a lot of workers get weekly or fortnightly wages or salaries.

Yes but people aren't paying just this bill they are paying a whole plethora of increased bills. if these cause people to drop health insurance, and other things. This will cost the govt more in other areas.

+1

... and a lot of people (including myself) are doing it with reduced wages.

I see the LPT going into a black hole ... we pay it and it will still be spent foolishly by the Government.

Health insurance costs now are a joke .. paying exhorbitent amounts to be covered in badly run hospitals ... only in Ireland.

Note that the LPT in 2014 goes to local authorities.

Also note that hosp care is (more or less) free to all residents of Ireland.

Except for 75 pn inpatient fee and 100 ED fee.

Health ins is a voluntary top-up to get faster access to specific doctors for some procedures.

I still see the LPT going into a black hole .... but I'm open to a change of mind/opinion when the results are in.

Hospital care with or without Health insurance doesn't inspire any confidence in me.
