Paying for father's care

My dad needs someone to stay with him at night. He will not go into a nursing home! I'm planning on employing a carer. A few questions:

1. In order to claim tax relief, according to Citizens Information
"The person being cared for must be totally incapacitated throughout the tax year (January to December) in which you are claiming the tax relief. However, this is not a requirement for the first year. The term totally incapacitated means that the person being cared for is disabled and requires a carer. The carer does not have to be employed for the full tax year."

Does a man in his 90s who is already in receipt of 3 HSE visits a day satisfy this definition? [I'm presuming so - just like confirmation!]

2. Do people have any idea how much a live-in carer costs? Also, any insight into any practical arrangements/contract structuring, etc. would be appreciated.

3. Where are the good places to source live-in carers?

If he's already getting 3 visits a day, could you ask your public health nurse for recommendations?

1. Revenue would probably be satisfied with a note from his GP.

2. Info here: https://liveincare.ie/ (no connection)

A friend managed to arrange live-in care for her elderly father at a reasonable price from three students (2 nurses and 1 doctor) who were delighted to have somewhere to live (in Dublin 4). This was about a decade ago, so I have no idea of the cost involved.

Hi @Louisval I am in a very similar situation and am also looking for a live-in carer for my Dad. I have just started an application with this company: https://www.alhomecare.ie/

They have a lot of information on their website and there is a weekly Zoom call that they hold which I would recommend.

They are very transparent in terms of pricing and how to structure this etc and I have heard nothing but positive reviews from a few people I know of who have got carers from them. Essentially they are a recruitment agency and help with establishing the employment contract between you and the carer.

I wish you and your Dad well on the journey of finding a suitable live in carer.
