Paying a deposit for house

What would happen if you paid the deposit for a house before signing a contract? Does this have any impact on the contract?

Any help on this would be great
 
The booking deposit was already paid, this was 10% of price. The contract was signed a few days later.Just wondering if this was unusual and if the contract would be affected?
