Hi,

Forgive me for my total ignorance of the tax system.

I get paid weekly by my employer. I work different hours each week and never really pay too much attention to the tax I'm being charged on my pay slip. I just trust that it's ok.

However recently I noticed a difference in the amount of paye duductions.

In last week of Jan I worked 34 hours at my basic rate of 11.93 p/h = 405.64. I also worked a Sunday which is 8hrs @ double time = 190.88.

This gives me a gross pay of 596.52.

That week I had paye deductions of 31.22, prsi of 30.71 and inc levy of 5.97. Total deductions of 67.90.

This gave me a net pay of 528.62.

Last week I worked the exact same hours once again giving me a gross pay of 596.52.

However this week I was deducted 48.92 in paye with the other deductions the same.

My net pay was reduced to 510.90.

Can anyone give me an explanation to as to why even though my gross pay was the same, I had to pay more tax?

Is it normal for paye deductions to fluctuate like that?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, PAYE is 'normally' calculated on a cumulative basis. It takes into account your total gross pay for the year to date, works out out how much PAYE you shoud have paid for the current point in time, subtracts that from what you have paid and charges/redunds you the difference.

Perhaps your tax credits changed. Ask the person who runs the payroll - they should be ablle to tell you the reason for the change.
